Video: Bill Russell DVM on Peterson Smith Equine Hospital: $22M annual sales, 130 employees, $7M payroll

Powerful testimony from veterinarian Bill Russell, a partner in Ocala’s Peterson Smith Equine Hospital, at the March 17 Florida House Commerce Committee hearing on HB 105. The decoupling bill would allow Gulfstream Park to retain its gaming licenses without having live horse racing. Dr. Russell spelled out what is at stake for his small business of $22 million in annual sales, 130 employees, $7 million payroll. ‘That means $15 million is used to support other agribusinesses in this state.’ ‘Every brick (of his equine hospital) was built and still supported by the thoroughbred racing industry…. Our story, the story of Peterson Smith, is just one of thousands. The Call to the Post, the bell, the speed, the photo finishes, the trophies, the Derby, the glitz and the glamor — that is the smallest part of our industry. What this industry is is mainly jobs.” Thanks to TRI industry partners Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association (FTBOA) for video of the committee testimony and National HBPA for hosting on Youtube. These individual videos are available for any media use as part of the Thoroughbred Racing Initiative’s advocacy campaign promoting live horse racing, starting in South Florida.
